In school, children are playing basketball. The coach shouts:
    — Hands up! Hands up on defense!
    Big, movie

How do I understand this phrase?
    Thank you.

I played basketball in high school. Our coach shouted this.

Players on defense should keep their arms and hands spread out widely all the time (like the 2 closer players in the picture), instead of letting their arms rest down by their sides (like the two players in back). This makes it harder for the offense team (the team with the ball) to pass the ball.

Ah, so "on defense" refers to the players themselves ("those who are on defense"). Thanks!
