I don't know if you think that's a problem or not. Just for purposes of discussion, I propose a version that might sound smoother to Anglophones:

I figured "tripod" was the platform -- and that "platform" was a general enough word to cover whatever the thing really looks like. I agree that "accendere" means set the thing on fire.

You can light the torch, but not the torch platform. I pictured the platform (tripode) as being a raised area with the torch on top. I thought what happened was the officials went up to the platform, where the torch was, then lit it.

Tripode is not really a platform where you can stand on, it's a three-legged rack used to support the brazier. Plus, it is a figurative concept.
