happen to or by chance

Even though you did not intend to major in some subject, sometimes you can major in some subject or take some classes. In such case, what do you say? The following sentence is the way I expressed the idea.

I happend to take an English class at a private Engish academy. pr
By chance, I took an Englisy class at a private Englisy academy.

what do you think?

I'm not sure that either sentence expresses what actually happened. You chose to take an English class ..., it wasn't something that just happened or happened by chance. I'd make a virtue of this choice: To enrich my language skills, I decided to take an English class at a private English academy.
