Does the bold section mean "experiences they have not experienced personally but have seen them in photographs or films"?

Context:
Many war artists across the world use historical wars to make points about today’s wars. Some base what they do on their own experiences and others make reference to experiences that they have not personally known save through photography. Television, newspapers, magazines and, now, the Internet provide other resources.

I hear "save" to be "except". I think it is widely understood in the USA. I would use "except".

Another way of expressing this is:

Except for seeing some photographs, they have no personal experience in war. (I would call them "hearsay warriors".)
