Oprah Winfrey is beloved by millions for her spiritual lessons about the meaning of life; she regularly shares stories about herself and others who have overcome tragedy to find a higher purpose.
(On Purpose; Paul Froese)

Would you be so kind as to tell me whether it should be read as "stories about others who when they overcame tragedy found a higher purpose (upon overcoming tragedy discovered a higher purpose)"?

Thanks.

Yes, this is how I understand it too: those people have gone through an ordeal of some kind, and then recovered from it. And afterwards, they found a new (higher) purpose in life.

I think a more literal wording would be:

...who have overcome tragedy and discovered a higher purpose.
