Hello, everyone.

Would you explain about "have the Academy purring come the Oscars or shunning altogether"?

It's an interesting move by Warner Brothers. The studio knows audiences love "Thwack!", "Pow!" action sequences; that they expect witty dialogue and plenty of banter, and CGI is a given.

Well, there's none of that in Joker.

Instead you have Joaquin Phoenix giving it the full Daniel Day-Lewis in a slow-burn performance of such intensity and weirdness, it will either have the Academy purring come the Oscars or shunning altogether.

It worked for me.

Thank you so much.

Joaquin Phoenix's performance will either make the Academy purr (like contented cats) when the Oscars are given. (The Academy will give the performance an Oscar.)

Or, the Academy will shun (avoid) the movie altogether.. It won't give the movie any Oscars.
Note: There would normally be an object after 'shunning' --- shunning it/ the movie. Perhaps it was omitted as a stylistic choice, to parallel 'purring', or maybe it was omitted by accident.
