Hi,

He asked the mining expert whether the ore might be lead. "No, it's not lead," said the expert.
"Perhaps it is zinc then?" asked he.

If I report what he asked, can I say the following? I think “might" works, but how about "could"?
He asked the expert whether it might be zinc.
He asked the expert whether it could be zinc.

    Of course might works. The format of your sentence is exactly the same as the one in that quote. But yes, could works too.
