I've heard someone say: "He called for quiet". Is this sentence correct? If not, how to improve it?

Thanks

    This can be heard occasionally.

Here's a meaning for the phrase "call for" (from thefreedictionary.com):
    3. To require; demand: work that calls for patience.

    Another alternative:
"He asked everyone to quiet down."
"He called out for everyone to be quiet."

It's your suggested alternatives here that sound a bit odd!
