I know that Timbuktu is 'Tombouctou' in French. My question, however, is not strictly that I'm looking for a translation of the above...
It's just that 'Timbuktu' is often used in English as a generic name for a place which is very far away - a kind of unknown or undefined place to which one refers when one is speaking of someone who has 'vanished' (off the face of the earth). One would use it to convey the idea that one has no idea where a person has gone to, etc.
In French, is there a generic place which approximates to 'Timbuktu'? Or, indeed, do the French also refer to 'Tombouctou' in similar contexts?
Merci d'avance!
