If a deceased person BE one's icon, is this BE supposed to be in past tense 'was' or present tense ' is'? Thank you.

Yasser Arafat is her icon.

Yasser Arafat was her icon.

    Various possibilities.
    1. Yasser Arafat is her icon, even though he is dead.
    2. Yasser Arafat was her icon, but he is no longer her icon; by choice..
    3. He was her icon when he was alive, but we do not know if he still is her icon. It is possibly not important.
