Hi
I wonder if I should continue this sentence with the past simple or the present simple, bearing in mind that the declaration is still in place.
He declared he is the best student
He declared he was the best student

He declared he is the best student
He declared he was the best student
I feel kind of unsure, but I would choose the past simple tense. Consider the sentence:
On 31st July, Andre declared that he would get a chunk of money at the end of the year.
Today is 13th August, and Andre will get the money on 31st December. With 'would' replaced with 'will', the sentence above may sound somewhat weird.
