I want to say he had a child (or "I had a child" but from a man's perspective), so I take it the verb 生む can't be used in this case. Which one should I use?
Thanks in advance.

あの人[私]は[に]子供ができた is a common word for it.

Also no problem to say あの人[私、うち]に子供が生まれた. 生まれた is the past tense of 生まれる, and is different from 産む.
