Japanese
A Japanese person I know explained to me:
In English there is a distinction between nationalities that end in 'ian' like Canadian or Italian and those that end in 'ese' like Japanese or Burmese. We can say either "He is Canadian" or "He is a Canadian," but we cannot say "He is a Japanese" or "She is a Chinese."

I would like to check if this rule still valid in contemporary English.
