Hi everyone! I'm not sure the meaning of the phase "he piled on the potato salad", does it mean "he took a lot of the potato salad (on his plate)?"

the context is as follows:
We had Hawaiian barbecue on his last night in the city. He didn’t think they had that in his hometown. But it’s not so bad, he said as if consoling me, as he piled on the potato salad, I think they have an Indian restaurant now.
