He recognized the value to him

    I would like to understand this sentence: "He recognized the value to him of such a mannerism and he had adopted it". (He and him referring to the same person)

    What I don't really understand is "to him" placed there. What is it, that such mannerism was valuable to him? That he could use it in some way?
