Could you kindly explain to me the meaning of the sentence: "he showed a five o’clock shadow by midday". Here is more context:

"In the best possible way, Phil Ducasse looked like the kind of guy who ran a one-stop valet and auto repair shop. I don’t think he owned any clothing that didn’t have an oil stain on it somewhere, he showed a five o’clock shadow by midday, and his hands appeared dirty even when they were clean. "

    Okay, it means his beard grew too fast. You shave in the morning and at 5 p.m. your stubbly face looks darker, i.e. there is a shadow on it. His beard grows so fast that at noon he looks the way men with normally growing beard look 5 hours later.
