We have a saying in Romanian about people who overstretch themselves, and the way it goes is to say that you stretch more than your quilt allows. It literally means that your feet are showing, and figuratively that you overstretch your finances (usually).

What would be the best way to translate this in English keeping its literal meaning intact? I'm not looking for an English equivalent but rather for a way to show in English how the phrase goes in Romanian.

Here's what I've come up with:
He stretched more than his quilt allowed.
