Hello!

He studied abroad - Er hat im Ausland studiert.
He studied in Germany - Er hat in Deutschland studiert.
He studied abroad in Germany - Er hat im Ausland in Deutschland studiert. ????

I'm not sure that the sentence sounds quite right using "in" twice... Any suggestions?

Thanks!

That is a good point, but I hear it quite often here in the U.S. In my ears, "He studied abroad" means "He did study abroad" or "He completed a university study abroad program," whereas "He studied in Germany" is less specific and could mean, for example, "He attended a German university for all of his studies."
