Many legends grew around him. For instance, he was believed _______ the snakes out of Ireland.
Which answer will be better, "to drive" or "to have driven"?

    Well, both options are grammatical. But the one that makes sense, talking about St Patrick, is:
    For instance, he was believed to have driven the snakes out of Ireland.
