The protagonist is one of Amber's princes. His brother Bleys is ascending the narrow stairway only one man can stand on, attacking and knocking down a row of enemies.

I knew that he was weakening. We were within a hundred feet of the top at that point.
I suddenly felt for him. He was my brother and he'd done well by me.
