a. I heard him from the kitchen.
b. I could hear him from the kitchen.

c. I couldn't hear him from the kitchen.

The sentences are mine.

Can one tell if I am in the kitchen or if he is?

My feeling is that all those sentences are ambiguous.

Many thanks.

They'd normally mean the speaker was in the kitchen. The context would tell if they were used that way or the other way round.

    Cross-posted.
