heavy-handed symbolism

word gumshoe

Hi every one,

I have read the following sentence in Elements of cinema by Robert Bird. Would some one paraphrase the underlined sentence?

While in the cinema Tarkovsky was most concerned to creat open spaced within which to capture time, his work in the theater suggests a greater tolerance for

heavy-handed symbolism.

What part of the underlined clause don't you understand, word gumshoe? If you can explain what is confusing you, your explanation may help members think of effective ways to paraphrase that clause.

That sounds right to me. He didn't use obvious symbols in his films as often as he did in his plays.

    I see that Beryl agrees.
