Here's mud in your eye!

I found the phrase by accident (source) when I was looking for some different drinking toast expressions. I've done some research, and there seems to be a bit of confusion as to the origin of the expression in question. However, the issue of my interest is how popular it is. Do you, native speakers, really use the expression? Is it in common use among both BrE and AmE speakers?

Thank you.

It's quite a rough sort of toast which I've heard quite often. There is a certain sort of person who likes to express his friendship through jocular rudeness of various kinds; the expression tends to be used by people like that.

Like Halloween, I've only ever heard it as a joke.

Perhaps I move in more refined circles than ewie and TT:cool:
