The sportsmen never saw a tiger, nor did they shoot anything else, though they saw number of deer, peacock, and wild board. They were giving up all hope of finding a tiger, and were beginning to shoot at jackals, when Grandfather, strolling down the forest path at some distance from the rest of the party, discovered a little tiger about eighteen inches long, hiding among the intricate roots of a banyan tree. Grandfather picked him up, and brought him home after the camp had broken up. He had the distinction of being the only member of the party to have bagged any game, dead or alive

Is this (hiding among the intricate roots ......) = (hiding inside the intricate roots of the ................)?

Please help me.

In my opinion, yes. Here "among" is just another way of saying the same thing.

hiding among the intricate roots ...... use this version

hiding inside the intricate roots .... This suggests that the roots are hollow and the cub could hide inside.

This link has a picture showing how the roots join the tree above the ground in some places, leaving a space among them, where the cub could easily hide; particularly if the tree was really big, like those in some of the photos.

    Hi All,

Among is much better than inside, as has been explained above.
It would be OK to substitute the less specific word "in". This would be similar to the usage, "The snake was hiding in the weeds."
