I was told that the word higala means friend in English. I was also told that you only use it with females. Is this true?...and if so, what's the male equivalent? Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.

    Higala applies to both male and female. I have not come across it to mean exclusively a female friend. Its usually denotes some kind of plurality. Like "our friend" or simply "friends".
