Hindi: karke (in Mumbai Hindi)

After talking to a Mumbai friend in English who spontaneously said something like "we'll have to wait and see karke", I again got curious about the use of the word 'karke'. Why do you think, she might want to insert the word 'karke' here?

Another friend said, she might use it to mark adverbs, as in "jaldi karke ao!"

Another example comes from this book on Bollywood actors, where the authors explicitly says 'karke' is a particularly Bombay Hindi phrase:

Any ideas?

  • I have two reasonably educated guesses but they're just guesses after all, one - it's an indicator of so-called reported speech or, could impart a similar tone like, '...sort of.' I'm curious what the actual answer should be.

I have not heard "karke" in such a way from my Bombay friends, but I have not lived in Mumbai, so maybe it exists. But, anyway, which Johnny Walker film does the dialogue belong to?

The Johnny Walker film is Aar Paar. The excerpt is from a book called 'Ten Years with Guru Dutt: Abrar Alvi's Journey'

It also seems like I'm not the only one who has wondered about this, as even on Quora people have submitted questions about the use of 'karke' :D

Why do most Marathi people add a Hindi word "kar ke" during their conversation?

Though the answer to that question discusses the addition of "ke" or "ki" rather than "kar ke." Anyway, I will see if I can find the dialogue in question in Aar Paar. In case you know where (around what time) it is in the film, do let me know.
