Hindi/Urdu: Farz-- duty or supposition or both?

The closest phrase I can think of is "farz karo ke hum do billiyaan hain...". This sounds bit tilted towards Urdu, but it is passable in Hindi. You will hear it frequently in Hindi movies. (Especially in courtroom dramas where the tough nut lawyer would cross examine a witness as "farz karo ke.." )

In the quote above, I learned a new way to use farz-- as in pretending, supposition. Is this word a different word than farz as in duty? I wonder if the two are spelled differently in urdu (i.e. with different z's)? In devanaagari I imagine both are spelled the same.

u r right, both are written same in urdu. its the same word, but farz (duty) is different than farz karna (assume).
by the way a beutiful poem of Ibn-e-Insha':
فرض کرو! ہم اہلِ وفا ہوں، فرض کرو دیوانے ہوں
فرض کرو! یہ دونوں باتیں جھوٹی ہوں افسانے ہوں

فرض کرو! یہ جی کی بپتا، جی سے جوڑ سنائی ہو
فرض کرو! ابھی اور ہو اِتنی، آدھی ہم نے چھپائی ہو

فرض کرو! تمھیں خوش کرنے کے ڈھونڈے ہم نے بہانے ہوں

A single word carries both (and even more) meanings. The spelling is فرض, which is also the three-letter Arabic root from which other words with related meanings are derived.

فرض کرنا can not only mean to assume, suppose, imagine, etc., but also to make obligatory, etc.
