Hindi/Urdu: reception desk

I am wondering how would you translate "reception desk" in an office, an institution, etc.? For "reception" in such context, would "svaagat" or "agvaani" would be a good term in such a case? And what would be the options in Urdu?

As for "desk", "mej"? Or maybe, a translation that is not literal would be better?

Thanks in advance!

    Urdu:

reception: act or process of receiving, welcoming, etc. - استقبال - istiqbaal

    • reception: a formal function/party to welcome guests, etc. - استقبالیہ - istiqbaaliyyah
Note: استقبالیہ can also be used as an adjective.

receptionist - استقبال کنندہ - istiqbaal kunandah

    desk - میز، مکتب - mez, maktab

    reception desk - استقبالیہ میز ؛ مکتبِ استقبال - istiqbaaliyyah mez; maktab-e-istiqbaal

Many of the words listed above have various uses and meanings depending on context. Let's see what other forum members suggest!

Wonderful as always Alfaaz. How about just Istiqbaal-maktab as the informal variant and maktab e istiqbaal as the more formal alternative. Mez just doesn't quite do in this case even if it is used in Persian for exactly such since connotations differ by each language. Nevertheless counter or LaanTer, the commonly used Urdabi variant could also suffice if neccessary. Otherwise the ones mentioned above are most adaquete.

So would it be fair to refer to a Reception Area as either just Istiqbaal as they do in Arabic or Istaqbaaliiyah I.e. "Faraz aap kaa istiqbaal/iiya meN intizaar kar rahaa hai"?

It would appear so اِسْتِقْبالِیہ لفظ کے معانی | اِسْتِقْبالِیہ - Urdu meaning | Rekhta Dictionary. How would you refer to the reception area?

Would istiqbaaliiya suffice? In Arabic they do use istiqbaal for that very purpose however if Urdu-phones deem that to be too vague how about istiqbaal-gaah?

Zafar is waiting for you at the reception- Zafar tumhaaraa/aap kaa istiqbaaliiyaa/istiqbaal/istiqbaal-gaah/jaa'e istiqbaal pe intizaar kar rahaa hai?
