Hello everyone:

Which one is more idiomatic?

a. His birthday was
close and she hadn't bought him anything.
b. His birthday was close at hand and she hadn't bought him anything.

Thanks

I haven't heard "close at hand" lately. I think it is a little out-of-date. So I think (a) is better.

I think all three of these are idiomatic in the US:

    - His birthday was close and she...
    - His birthday was coming soon and she...
    - It was almost his birthday and she...
