his left arm flung out

Senior Member
I go back to bed, but I
can’t fall asleep again. All I can think about is the phone in the bedside drawer. I glance over at Tom,
lying with his left arm flung out, his head thrown back.
What does "his left arm flung out" mean?

"Flung" is a synonym of "thrown", but the author did not want to say "thrown" twice. He is lying in bed with his left arm stretched out horizontally, pointing away from his torso.
