Hit pause

I've seen this expression several times but would like to clarify how common it is and if I use it right: "I'm exhausted, I feel I should hit pause on my work and have some getaway for some days". Or "hit the pause button"?

I've never seen or heard 'hit pause' in your context, but I would understand it. It's a figuritive use of the literal meaning of pressing the pause button on a music or DVD payer, or similar.

Anyway what is more appropriate: "I should hit pause" or "I should hit the pause button"?

    I'm concerned about the article.
