hold a barrier on the stairs

Hello,

I don't have the slightest idea how do we call it in English that's why I put this link. I am refering the barrier on the stairs that you can hold when you get up or down the stairs.

Could you please correct the sentence below :

''Please hold a barrier when you get down, the stairs are slippery and you could to fall down''

I call it a hand rail, or just a rail.

I call it a "bannister."

''Please hold the bannister as you down; the stairs are slippery, and you could fall down''

In general, in a sign or alert like yours, you would omit the word "down" at the end: "you could fall" is quite clear and common.
