hook or get caught?

I don't know if "get caught works in this sentence:"we cover that rivet with a piece of the silicone tubing to avoid the thread to get caught". Would it be better to say "...to avoid the thread to hook". This is an article about fishing, by the way.

In fishing, one hooks a fish; but thread never hooks unless it hooks on something, but then we generally would say 'catch on something'.

We cover that the rivet with a piece of the silicone tubing to avoid [keep might be a better word here] the thread to from getting caught [on the rivet.?].
