To 'hoover' can be equal to vaccuming - but do you also hoover a word on the internet to for instance see there is a link attached to the word?

Appreciate a clarification!

    You probably want hover -- you can hover (put your cursor) over a word to see if the cursor arrow turns into a finger-pointing hand. If it does turn into a hand, the word or phrase is a link.

    I wonder whether you are thinking of 'hover over'?
    When you hold your cursor over a word to see whether it is a link, or to see one of those messages, we call that "hovering over" the word/link/etc,

    Added: Oh, well. Anything worth saying is worth saying twice.
