"They used to travel by horses"
I'm wondering whether it is "by horses" or "on horses"

    Either "by horse" or "on horses." The former sounds better to me.

    It's the same as "I used to travel to work by train but now I take the bus". You took many different trains over the years but your mode of transportation was the train, singular, and now you take many different buses but your mode of transportation is the bus, singular.
