Back in the day, of course, it was common for family animals to die at home, whether from natural causes, a shot from the family rifle or a needle from the bag of a vet who routinely traveled from house to house and farm to farm. The Washington Post

Dear all,

Are "house to house" and "farm to farm" set phrases? If not, should there be an article "a" put before each noun? Thanks.

I don't know that they're set phrases, but they're very familiar:
We travelled house to house, farm to farm, county to country, state to state, country to country.
