"Look for a mentor or knowledgeable colleagues who will give you targeted feedback. Tell them specifically what you want: "I'm working on an impactful opening. I want you to tell me how it lands or give me pointers on how to improve."
What does "how it lands" mean?

  • It would help if you told us the context…

But presumably this is about a piece of commercial writing or advertiisng copy, and “how it lands” means what effect or impact it has on the target audience.

Someone is asking a mentor about making an impactful opening to a speech or meeting. "I want to know how it lands or give me pointers on how to improve." The chapter is talking about practicing and preparing.
I think he's rehearsing the opening and asking his mentor "how it lands" probably meaning how does he see it? Is it impactful enough?

Yes, it relates to whether the opening is “impactful” enough — or, more generally, whether it comes across as intended. The only difference from what I said before is that I now know the audience consists of listeners rather than readers.

The question is what effect does it have on the listeners. Does it have a strong effect? Does it have a positive effect? Is it something the audience will relate to and feel a connection to and be inspired by?
