    My OP may sound weird...
When someone is trying to find a line in a huge passage, can others (who already have found) instruct her this way- fifth line from the top or third line from the bottom? Or should we say- fifth line from the first/ from the beginning or third line from the last?

    Please help!!

    Short version:
    Paragraph 2, line 7.

This does not work well when you want to refer to a paragraph or line from the bottom, so 'from the bottom' is still needed:
Third paragraph from the bottom, 7th line from the bottom.

It's like giving travel directions. You pick a noticeable landmark (paragraph, end, beginning, etc.) and measure off from that.

I was once given directions: Drive two thirds of the way down this road and make a left turn.

The road was about 10 miles long so this was a problem.

I replied, "So I should drive all the way to the end and turn back for one third of the way and make a right turn?"

"No, no. Just drive two thirds of the way and make a left turn.":)

How else would he know where the two-thirds point was?

Oh yeah! Didn't think about that..But maybe you take a calculator & figure out what the two thirds of 10 is and then checking it out on the dashboard ( I don't know what is where the mileage is shown called:confused:), drive...:D
Don't worry, it was a ridiculous joke!;)

I didn't know how long the road was when I was given the directions. So I couldn't calculate the two thirds until I would drive the full length. I could then do the calculation, but I would have to drive back the third and turn right instead of left.

Now I get it. Then yes, you had to drive all the way to the end first. I thought you already knew the road was about 10 miles long.

So, would you mind to share the rest- what you did then. Did you do drive to the end & then got back for the third to get to your destination? I mean it must have been wearying!
