This forum has been created to give all forum members the opportunity to share their knowledge of their professions, hobbies, and other topics of general interest.
If you wish to start a glossary thread, you will need to know the following:
- By default, the person who starts the glossary is the “Manager” of the glossary.
- Glossary Managers will maintain a ‘master’ copy of the glossary, and periodically will add all additions to the master copy, and post the updated master copy.
- Glossary Managers should also check to make sure nobody has overwritten or deleted any glossary entries.
- Managers don’t have to know everything! If you have a list of words used in your special interest topic, and can only define half of them, that’s ok. Other forum members are invited to help, both with translations of the terms, and with additional definitions.
- To get started, copy this Excel file, and fill in the words column in either English or in your preferred language. Give as many word/term/phrase definitions as you can. Then create a new thread, and attach your file. The thread title should be the same as the glossary file title.
- Download the latest version of the file (from the last post).
- To add a new translation or definition, just put it in the correct column!
- To add a new language, create another column and add the translations that you know.
- To add a new term to the list, add it at the bottom of the current list, with any translations that you know.
- If you disagree with a translation or definition, discuss that in your post. Do not change an existing entry in a file.
- Please do not copy definitions from any published book or other Internet site outside of WordReference.com. This is illegal and will get WR into potential difficulties with copyright owners. Give short definitions in your own words. Translations of common terms can be copied from other sources, but you must KNOW that it is correct.
- If you have questions about uploading or downloading spreadsheet files, post those in the sticky thread “Excel File Questions and Answers” in this forum.
