This phrase is part of a telephone conversation, the person who answers the phone says HOW'D YOU MAKE OUT?

What does it mean? Is it the same as How are you doing?

Would it be appropriate to translate it as ¿CÓMO ESTAS? o ¿CÓMO TE VA?

I would deeply appreciate opinions from English native speakers.

How'd you make out is the same as 'how did you get on?'. In other words it is enquiring about how some past event went.
