    I think to hump here means donner un coup de rein pour se mettre quelque chose sur le dos.

    And ruck is short for rucksack.

    But please give us more context.

    Well done, SwissPete! I was all at sea about the meaning of the English on this one, and I had "humped" a lot of "rucks" in my life. We should add for English learners that this is very informal language or soldiers' slang not generally used by civilian hikers. I had never heard it before in my life either in the UK, the USA or Canada.
