Hustle roses down the avenue

I´m translating a poem in which the author is explaining how sad his life has been since he became an alcoholic and I´m having some trouble trying to understand the last part:

" I was born to hustle roses down the avenue of the dead "

I´ve found lots of different meanings about hustle such as "vender" but it doesn´t sound well to me.

Hope you can help me out!

Why not? I think the ideas of "move quickly and roughly" and "misrepresent one's abilities or merchandise" and "sell aggressively" and "engage in illicit business", all mixed together, and with roses added in, produce an interesting combination.
