I never saw this type of dog. Is this dog "hybrid" or "mixed"?
I never saw this type of fruit. Is it "hybrid" or "mixed"?

Are they both correct? If so, which is better in AmE? Thank you.

Although "hybrid" is often used to refer to mixed breeds of dogs, virtually all domestic dogs are of the same species, i.e. Canis familiaris.
"Mixed breed" is commonly used in AE these days, since "mongrel" is considered by many to be pejorative.
