I am reluctant to say goodbye / “goodbye” to you because I will miss you very much.

Can I use either word in bold? Thanks.

    Hello Karen

Are you asking whether you need to put the word goodbye in inverted commas in your sentence?

If so, my answer is "you can, but you don't need to":).

I agree with Loob. You could go with the quotes, or without them, but I would hyphenate: good-bye/"good-bye". :)
