"I confused the beat of the drum with the beat of my heart."

Does this just mean that I thought the beat of the drum was my heartbeat?

    Hey! I have a full quote:

    "And I remember I confounded the beat of the drum with the beating of my heart, and was pleased at its calm regularity."

    The context is that he's chasing someone through the wilderness, so there's reason to think his heartbeat is sporadic.
