I could have done without

Hi, I was writing this sentence "I thought I could have done without a girlfriend until I knew you".
Is the use of the form "do without" correct in this case?
I want to say that before knowing this person I tought that I could have been by myself.
Is it correct to say "I could have done without" or this form can be used just in the present simple "do without"?
Thank you!

"I thought I could have done without" is fine in other contexts, but in this particular example I would say "I thought I could do without."
