I imagined being trapped

Spanish - Argentina
Hello, everyone!
I am trying to translate a text and I am not sure about the meaning of a sentece, so I was wondering if, perhaps, a native speaker might shed some light into it for me. :)

The texts is about a diver who sees a big shark. He says:
"I imagined being trapped in that relentless tide and carried down into a black chamber with a lot of tiny fish."

I am not sure about what the man is thinkig. Is he trying to say something like:

"I thought I was going to be trapped in that relentless tide..."
"I tried to picture in my head what it would be like to be trapped in that relentless tide..." ?

I hope you guys can help me. Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi, heypresto! Thank you so much!

LOL! I guess you're right. I might just as well have written "I pictured what it would have been like..." - I think that if you're facing a shark, you're not actually making an effort to get mental images, right? :)

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.
