I love you as ever

I am wondering about this sentence at the end of a US letter : "I love you as ever".

I know "Love" at the end of a letter in English does not mean you are in love with the person you are writing to.

Could "I love you as ever" have the same meaning?

Or does it have to be love-love?

Can it mean friendship, strong bonds?

Can it be used between heterosexual men?

Incidentally, how would you translate it into French?

Je t'aime toujours autant is quite love-love...

Avec toute mon affection is less...

Other ideas?

Thank you for your answers!:)
