Hi,

Are the sentences below correct?

1.It was I who/that called you last night.
2.It was me who/that called you last night.
3.It is the book which/that had influence on me.
4.It was the book which/that I bought yesterday.

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi,Thank you for your reply. I just want to make sure which is more correct to use, 'who, that or which' in this kind of structure.

1.It was I who/that called you last night.
According to my grammar book, 'who' and 'that' are fine here.

2.It was me who/that called you last night.
According to my grammar book, 'who' can't be used here.

3.It is the book which/that had influence on me.
According to my grammer book, 'which' can't be used here but my English book say 'which' can be used here and that puzzled me.
4.It was the book which/that I bought yesterday.
    It is the same as#3.
5.It is John that/whom I am looking for.
According to my grammar book, 'whom can't be used here, and my English book say 'whom' is fine.

Does anyone have any ideas about my questions?

1.It was I who/that called you last night.
2.It was me who/that called you last night.
3.It is the book which/that has influenced on me.
4.It is the book which/that I bought yesterday.
These are called "split sentences". Your structure is correct.
Your tenses do not always fit.
Quite often, split sentences like (1) are replaced by sentences involving "the one(s)".
= (1)I am the one who called you last night.
"Me / I" as the antecedent of "who" are both correct in today's English. "It was I who" is classical. When used in modern English it is emphatic.
