Hello,
I wonder if someone could explain me why in this sentence (My parents' 50th anniversary is coming up and I thought I would surprise them with a family reunion.) It is used I thought I would and not I thought I could.
If I said " My parents' 50th anniversary is coming up and I thought I could surprise them with a family reunion" would it sound natural to natives ears too?
Thank you.

Personalmente usaría "I think I could surprise them" en concordancia con el tiempo presente "....is coming up....."
Usaria "thought" si la frase fuera "... was coming up and I thought...."
En este último caso se podría usar alternativamente "would" en vez de "could"

    Mi opinión:
I thought I would surprise them en el pasado es el equivalente a I think I will surprise them en el presente. Es la intención de la persona que habla.
I thought I could surprise them para mí expresa una posibilidad. Creí que podía darles una sorpresa.
